we watch through windows
rain falls from clouds far away
on someone else's heads?

November gales
On the sides of homes,
gales of November slap rain:
last wrath of autumn?

good things about the rain
Good things about the rain and cooler weather this week
- regular demolition of spider web blocking my deck door
- How many times will it take before it gives up and goes far away to more welcoming surroundings?
- Hopefully this many.
- more tiny tree frog fairies on the windows at work

Keep on going
Four froggies clinging
grimly to windows
every time I passed.
A personal best of
sorts, and I swear
one was showing
V for victory.

hoping for a rainbow
After the torrential rain,
hail, and wind gusts made me fear
for my windows
and forced me
off the road, I
was hoping
for a rainbow.
And there it was.
hail, and wind gusts made me fear
for my windows
and forced me
off the road, I
was hoping
for a rainbow.

a good day for rain
In the morning it was that rain nearly indistinguishable from fog: big, slow droplets floating lazily and vaguely down. I love that kind of rain because it coats and collects on the trees and the twigs and the leaves and falls at random with big plops well-spaced raindrops falling in slow motion surprising and relaxing.
In the evening, it was a lovely fog, making everything mysterious.

Eclipse with clouds and rain
Somewhere above the clouds tonight
was an interesting eclipse I wish I'd seen:
half the moon in the shadow of the earth
and half reflecting all the sun. But it was
completely overcast, autumn cold and
drizzly, and all I could see when I looked
up was the rain and the city lights
reflecting down off the clouds, and I
wanted to know how to show love
to this broken person in my life, but
I can't see past the clouds and the cold rain.

October haiku
.
rain falls on the roof
winter comes to steal the warmth
the trees bleed and rust

the tree on the left under a solidly cloudy sky
the tree on the left
is glowing with such brilliant
gold in the gloom that
at first I thought the sun
had come out and spoiled
my lovely, melancholy day

at first I thought the sun
had come out and spoiled

another perfect day for rainbows
Today was a perfect day for rainbows,
But I didn't see a single one.

loving the darkness

I don't want to turn
on the lights because
it will be harder
to see the rain

What I wanted to do that day
What I want to do is huddle on the couch watching the wind whip through the cottonwoods listening to the sound of the leaves and the rain drizzling down, just existing, not trying to distract myself from the pain or discomfort or the fever, not trying to accomplish anything, letting my thoughts drift instead of constantly yanking them back on course of necessity. I want to watch the clouds move past in ragged layers in the sky and see if the sun will ever come out today.

when the trees are greener
the way the trees are greener
in a spring storm with rain but no wind
water soaking the trunks and making
then darker like the lead-grey sky
making the world glow
a bright and luminous green

water soaking the trunks and making
then darker like the lead-grey sky
making the world glow

tomorrow will be brilliant
.
water with an identity crisis
not sure if it's rain or snow
staggering and stumbling
sideways coating everything
a sound like glass falling
from the sky and bouncing
collecting on top of my hood
rhythm making me sleepy
icicles like grass growing down
from power lines and fences
every straight-ish line developing
sudden upper teeth the wind gnashes
gleaming trees promise
even if tonight is miserable
and unbearable tomorrow
will be brilliant

a Lullaby
.
It finally rained the other night,
a long, soaking rain,
and I remember now
why winter is unbearable
sometimes, keeping all
that soothing rain
locked up tight
in the greedy clouds
or making me
jealous
by sending the sound
of rain elsewhere
when I need it here
to help me sleep.

Night racing
Can someone explain why people scream down the highway late at night racing each other? They make an unbelievable racket and sometimes wake me out of a lovely temporary sleep at, like, 3 in the morning. Don't they go deaf being that close to that much noise?
At least they don't do it when the roads are wet, which is another reason to love thunderstorms and rain. As if I needed another reason for that. :)

Sweater Migration '09
Just finished the annual process of sweater migration. It may seem a bit early to you, but I wish I'd been able to do it two weeks ago. All my layers are resettled, heavier ones to the bottom of the cabinets where I can reach them more easily. The thermometer will probably only go downhill from here.
It rained today again, the dark, drizzly, low-slung-clouds-sulking rain, and it bothered me for a bit until I saw the leaves on the sidewalk and remembered that rain and cold October days are how leaf shadows are born. I do love leaf shadows. I'm willing to put up with a little rain for their sakes.
What do you love about early autumn?
