I feel sometimes like a cut
flower, slightly wilted, placed
again in water and revived by
liquid being pulled up
to stiffen the wilty bits, knowing
that someday I won't have
to try so hard.

the scent of heaven

Between the allergies and too many broken noses,
I miss out on many things, but even my battered
sense of smell can tell that

this
extravagantly blooming
tree

must give off something
very close
to the scent
of heaven.

I can still smell it

I wonder if the smell of the lilacs still hangs in that yard or if it's only the memory so strong that makes me think it's still there so long after all the flowers bloomed and died.

The thing about lilacs
is that after they're dead
