is hope like this?

the way the tree appears
completely without life
today but could sprout buds
tomorrow if you wait

the difference between

I have been thinking about
the difference between

thinking you are the puzzle
and
thinking you are a piece,
thinking you are the tapestry
and
thinking you are a thread,
thinking you are the body
and
thinking you are a member of it.

25 December 2014

The 12 months of 2014: A sort of Christmas letter?

WITH NO RESPECT TO MAKING IT SCAN CORRECTLY or making the numbers really match, here is my year in review.  If I write more about a topic, I'll link to that post from below, and I'll keep changing the date of this post, so this will be at the top.  Probably.  Keep checking back or wait until December 31st.  The choice is yours!  (And thanks for stopping by. : )  Purple bolded text indicates there was something added to that entry most recently.
  1. twisted ribcage: There were a lot of snowstorms last winter . . .
  2. oratorio performances (pub sings, music-y funtimes):  Less than a month and a half after #1, I was singing two performances of an oratorio . . .
  3. houses outbid on (or why the elderly are my tribe but won't accept me): It was such a seller's market.
  4. plasma donations
  5. uneven subfloors
  6. months house hunting and not enough reading books
  7. writing drafting readings
  8. small group departures
  9. doctors appointments: (Short catch-up story - got hurt working for TSA after I graduated from college and have been dealing with chronic pain and poor health since then.)  I've given up on getting anything like justice from my former employers, and now it's all about trying to figure out how to live with the pain and be as healthy as I can with the resources I have.  Pain.
  10. terrible green sludgies
  11. pilot lights out
  12. months unpacking: Found house.  Packed in a month.  Will unpack over the following 12 months.

If all I cared about was the pain

then I should not have held
the baby, but I refuse
to reduce my life to
the reduction
of pain
if it means
I can never hold
the babies.

23 April 2013

You can't spoil them at this age (4 weeks)

.
Because I held
the baby too much,
my shoulder is
sore from keeping him
on top of me (because
he is a flopper), and
my back and hip ache
from rocking him
(because he likes
to be held as you walk,
but I can't
hold him
safely
that way, so I
must become a
perpetual motion machine
as I sit, arms held up
with pillows).  I
have taken ibuprofin
several times, yet
still I ache
because I
could not
possibly
hold him
enough.

we take turns
rocking him
from one sleep
to the next
as gently
as we can

useful insomnia

Whoever said baby breathing
is a soothing, comforting sound
never held a 4-week-old still
twitchy and erratic and only rarely
breathing regularly, like a tiny,
slightly wheezy bellows felt
through the collarbone more than
heard, nor felt those sudden, startling
stiffenings that last for three seconds
of baby nightmare and then are gone,
replaced by even more labored
and erratic breathing, so you can't
tell if he's asleep because he's facing
away from you, so his daddy has
to check before he takes him away
to bed, and you can go back to yours.

"The Lady of Shalott" by William Holman Hunt

"I am half sick of shadows," said
            The Lady of Shalott.
-Alfred, Lord Tennyson

I am glad it is December,
that the awful November
picture on my calendar has
flipped, that December's picture
is one I have seen in person.

Few calendar prints can capture
a painting, so while I am glad
the November goats are gone, I long
for the real thing whole
and complete and beautiful.

But this is a lie because
I love this smaller test
painting by the master's
own hand since he was
mostly blind by then and
couldn't paint the full
canvas himself.

I prefer this panel
because I remember
how the unraveling
threads in it sliced
through the picture, so
sharp the air between us
was nearly bleeding.

the impossible dream

to OWCP with bitterness

I wake up
in the morning,
and I feel rested.

I get up
and go
about my day,

and I
am not
in pain.

Why I like exits more than entrances

.
There are bars
I can push
with a shoulder
or a leg
           no handles
or knobs to grasp
twist pull struggle
with fail to open
cleanly
.
